There is a word in Residential Capital Partners (ResCap) that says a lot about the company Paul Jackson has spent nearly two decades building: Partners.
For Jackson, it is more than a name. It reflects how Residential Capital Partners approaches its borrowers, its capital providers, its employees, and even an industry filled with companies that compete against one another every day.
ResCap has operated as a balance-sheet lender from the beginning, raising capital, making its own credit decisions, and keeping the loans it originates. Jackson says the company has never sold a loan in its history.
But the story behind the company is anything but linear.
Jackson began his career in corporate banking at J.P. Morgan Chase, transitioned into commercial real estate, became an entrepreneur before turning 30, invested in everything from commercial properties to freshwater marinas, and eventually went from being a real estate investor to a debt buyer during the Global Financial Crisis.
